Just some stuff I was thinking about recently.
Custody laws have changed a lot in the last 40 years. Back in the 70′s, when I was born, it was highly unusual that children were given custody to their fathers. Normally the child(ren) went to the mother or even to foster care, rather than the father. Now, if the father is a more adequate caregiver, custody goes to them. My sister and I were split up and this, in the 70′s. From my understanding I was asked where I wished to live and I chose my father – I am not sure how true that is, but I went to my father and my sister to my mother. Unusual for those days.
A few weeks ago, a co-worker of mine left work early to head to the Toronto airport to say goodbye to some longtime friends and their children. The parents had been in Canada and trying to get citizenship for the last 12 years and have had 3 children while here. Unfortunately it was ruled that they had to leave Canada and though they appealed a few times, they lost their final appeal and headed back to Trinidad. It is not like any family member was in any legal trouble and the
deportation laws came into affect. They had been paying taxes since entering the country, both had jobs and were in all appearances Canadians. Sometimes our government can be so messed up.
Especially when it comes to federal crimes. I mean, how does someone get 6 years for a crime of kidnapping and torture but can be out in less than 2? Yes, our system needs an overhaul. It is so backwards.
